Not a great deal to report on for the last week – the weather was too dreadful to undertake very much activity. It was cool and wet virtually every day; if it wasn’t full blown rain, then it was dreary mizzle. However, we did manage a walk around the marina and drooled over the lovely “weekender” moored there. It belongs to the owner of Corona beers and is based in Cairns all year and only used for about six weeks annually. It only costs a mere $13 million a year to run. When we returned to the caravan park, it was really a case of how the other half live, with a motor bike and its camper trailer (for one!) all set up beside the camp kitchen.
Not much happened on Saturday, simply a visit to Rusty’s Market and an ice cream. Sunday continued wet and cold – a good time to check out the A & E facilities at Cairns Hospital. After having my fingers slapped (figuratively speaking) a number of times for not calling an ambulance, I was given the all clear to return home in the late afternoon. The service passed with flying colours! Miserable weather continued on Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday, with the sky looking a little clearer (for a few hours, at least), we were joined by John and Brenda, who drove down from Port Douglas, for lunch at the Trinity Beach Tavern. We enjoyed a few hours catching up on a year’s news.
Today, the clouds and rain disappeared, the sun came out, the temperature rose dramatically, as did all the moisture in the ground! After a quick trip to Smithfield Shopping Centre during the morning for spectacle repairs, we really appreciated the cool shade at the Botanic Gardens this afternoon. There are always lots of different flowers/plants to see on each visit and the hot weather certainly brought the butterflies out in abundance.
