The mornings are getting colder!  We left Echuca this morning, with Ballarat our next stopover.  The clear, blue skies quickly clouded over and watching the temperature drop was even more exciting that watching the fuel gauge drop.

The countryside was lush and flat as far as Bendigo, with lots of very contented cows and happy sheep with newborn lambs in tow.  Bendigo was our first big city since leaving Cairns, with the exception probably of Dubbo.  Lots of traffic and lots of old gold diggings as we travelled through the central goldfields of Victoria.  Although we didn’t stop, we did drive through the pleasant looking town of Daylesford; we also passed Mt Franklin (home of the water?).

We arrived at the Big4 Goldfields Caravan Park just been noon and a very cheerful and helpful trainee checked us in and took us personally to our site.  The park is very nice (no big gum trees overhead), with a large site and slab for us – and the amenities block is heated!!!  Me thinks it must get cold here.

This afternoon, our first stop was at Jayco for some new towing mirrors.  Someone has been complaining for the last three months that the passenger side mirror wont stay fixed in place, and with Melbourne not far away, he decided a new set was called for.  We then stopped at Lake Wendouree for a visit to the Botanic Gardens and a wander along the lake.  A fisherman trying his luck assured us there were large brown and rainbow trout in the lake.  After battling the manic drivers in the supermarket car park, we ended up at the Eureka Stockade.

With Sovereign Hill just across the street and up the hill a couple of hundred metres, we have decided to revisit this site tomorrow.
