Just the thing on a cold day in Canberra!

We didn’t enjoy the very cold and foggy start to the day – in fact, one person stayed in bed as long as possible!  After undertaking the laundry, we have come to the conclusion that there must be a little elf in the caravan who likes to hide things: in the last day the lid of a microwave dish and a striped sock have vanished into thin air!

James and Maureen collected us about 11.00 am, just as the fog was starting to lift, and drove us to the Kingston Foreshore for lunch.  This is a new development of apartments and cafes on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin near Manuka Oval and after walking along the line of cafes, we settled on a brasserie for first course, moved on to our favourite ice creamery (Movenpick are now in Canberra!!!) for dessert and finished up in the chocolate bar to make a takeaway purchase for later.  Although still chilly, the sunshine was very pleasant.

Following lunch, we toured the Glassworks, which was nearby.  This was the old power plant for Canberra and has now been turned into a place where people can watch other people make objects from glass.  We spent a very interesting and informative hour watching two young ladies experimenting with different techniques for an artist, who had the most exquisite piece on display in the foyer.  There were some magnificent pieces on display for purchase, all had at least four numbers before the “.00” but we decided we didn’t really have enough room under the bed for storage.

A quick tour to Red Hill Lookout, which was badly obscured by trees, followed and we were able to see Parliament House from a different angle, with the Australian War Memorial in the distance.  We also drove past a number of embassies on our return, including China, India and Brazil, as well as the British High Commission.

You just reminded me why we don't go to Canberra this time of year.
