The Boulders

Saturday, 11 August 2012

We had another holiday on Thursday and just enjoyed the beautiful tropical weather and fed the fish in the river next to the caravan park.

Friday morning was hair cutting day for Les but unfortunately the clippers decided to die with a large, protracted groan! We headed into Cairns Central, hoping to find a replacement and after listening to a young lady at the Shaver Shop who didn’t know anything about any of the clippers, we ended up back at Myer. With new clippers with new settings, the hair trim was really a guess in the dark as to length – next time we will settle for No 6, not No 5!

While we were in the shopping centre, I also purchased a new camera. The Olympus has done a fantastic job but is starting to get a little tired; it has been replaced with a Nikon which is a little larger but still fits nicely in the handbag. My zoom capabilities have now gone from 7x to 16x. The afternoon was spent actually reading the instruction manual and promptly forgetting most of the manual contents. The camera does have a really cool feature – it can be set to take a photo when the subject smiles!

Today we decided to check out The Boulders, just west of Babinda. The weather continued to be great and the hills/mountains were very sharp as we drove south for about 65 kms. The Boulders is an area around the Babinda Creek where great granite boulders have landed and been shaped by the force of water in the creek. The area has been developed by the Cairns Council and now contains a lovely picnic area and safe swimming area, as well as formed paths through the rain forest and along the creek to the various lookouts. We spotted a sun bird’s nest hanging below one of the lookouts and this tiny bird was flitting in and out of the nest. This creek and its boulders must look absolutely amazing during the wet season. Babinda is now officially known as the wettest town in Australia with an annual rainfall of about 3400 mls – that is wet!

Things must be much more relaxed in Queensland!. Down here, shopping centre management - and probably the local constabulary - would take a very dim view of mingling ablutions with purchases. I suppose retirees might be afforded some leniency, but not so much that they would be able to complete the purchase and leave without any comment!
