Last night, after the sun went down and the jungle woke up, we fronted up to the reception area, along with 60 other people, for a night tour of Paronella Park. Being good Scouts, we had brought our own torches, but there were plenty available for the others to use. After being split into two groups – all the children (and parents) were in one group – we headed off into the dark, with all its unseen creepy crawlies. The park was so different at night, with the main features floodlit and the remainder in total darkness, as the moon had not yet risen. It was probably just as well that the paths were uneven, as we had to watch where we were walking and couldn’t shine our torches into the rainforest and see just what was watching us! I did have a bit of a thrill when a bandicoot dashed out of the darkness, ran over my feet and disappeared again. This tour was a wonderful complement to the daytime tour and well worth the overnight stay.
This morning we headed to Cairns, passing through some very rich and fertile farming land around Innisfail – sugar cane, banana and paw-paw plantations being the main produce. The cane harvest is in full swing, with all the sugar mills working. On the way we passed Walsh’s Pyramid – we are still undecided about running in the annual race to the top of it.
It was less than a two hour drive to Crystal Cascades Caravan Park in Cairns – and it felt like we were coming home! We have now set up for the next couple of months, with the tables and chairs under the awning, as well as the barbecue in place. It will be nice to sit back and relax now, and enjoy the warmth. Today has been just superb, about 27 degrees and low humidity, which means the air is very clear. Fingers crossed that it continues. The warm weather also means that Cat is now rapidly shedding!!!
