Head 'em up ... |
Saturday, we actually saw some sun for a few hours between showers and I even managed to get the washing dry!
Mid-afternoon was time for the Richmond vs Gold Coast Suns football match and we joined over 11,000 fans at Cazaly Stadium. Just as we arrived at the stadium, the clouds opened up again – we are in danger of developing gills and webbed feet!!! We had been fortunate in obtaining tickets for the northern stand, directly behind the goals and quickly discovered that the seats weren’t under cover and we were in the middle of the Richmond cheer squad. The sun came out and the Suns came out – right in front of us for their pre-match warm-up. The weather stayed fine until half time, but we were anxiously watching the black clouds building up until they finally burst again and the raincoats were quickly zipped up. The game was rather scrambly and with a strong southerly wind blowing, we found that most of the action happened near us. From the noise which erupted around us when the final siren sounded, I believe that the Richmond fans were happy.
Sunday started out with the usual rain, again, and James suggested that we head to the Mareeba Rodeo and Show; there was also the possibility that it may not be raining at Mareeba. It wasn’t! We were very strong and didn’t give way to the temptation of buying showbags and “enjoying” the many thrilling rides on offer, but instead made our way to the stands to watch some rodeo events – barrel racing for the ladies, bucking horse and bull riding, calf throwing, etc. I am happy to report that no animals were injured or appeared to be unduly stresses, but can’t same the same for the riders (no riders were hurt, either). We were actually amazed that the cattle seemed very well trained and after doing their bit, immediately trotted to the open gate. To give our rear ends a rest from the metal bleachers, we did a turn through the show exhibits and stalls, even buying a Christmas present to put away for a certain family member. The R.M. Williams truck and pantechnicon shop were spectacular – it would be great to actually see it on the road. We completed the day with a visit to Coffee Works for a coffee and cookie.
We heard during the week that the Big4 Caravan Park at Goondiwindi was for sale, so a bit of surfing quickly turned up their sale advertisement – and guess who was in one of their internet photos?
