Mustering |
The rain stopped about 4.30 pm yesterday, but the mud
didn’t disappear overnight. This morning
was very overcast as we hitched up for the drive to Windorah. Stangely, there was very little wildlife on
the road this morning, apart from two brolgas and a few kangaroos. However, the cattle on the road certainly
kept us alert! The road surface was
good, alternating between one and two lanes, with gravel shoulders which were
still a bit soft in places. We could not
understand the amount of oncoming traffic today, nearly all caravans,
motorhomes or camper trailers. After
talking to a couple who had stopped for a rest, we discovered they were a
tagalong music tour comprising 80 vehicles and had literally taken over all the
camping facilities in Windorah on Friday night.
After see all these vehicles leaving, we weren’t so concerned about
getting a powered site at Windorah.
After the recent rains, the countryside had definitely greened up, which
accounts for the lack of roadkill. We
also came across three dead wild dogs strung up in a tree (seems to be the
accepted protocol after killing these pests).
Shortly before crossing Coopers Creek, on a two lane stretch of bitumen
and travelling slowly, an oncoming car threw a stone at us, removed a piece of
windscreen and left a lovely star about 2cms each way. A patch has been applied and fingers crossed
that we don’t have any chilly nights.
We are staying at the one and only caravan park in
Windorah, which is very basic but does have power and water. A lady is supposed to come around about 7.00
am to collect fees. We needn’t have
worried about getting a site – there are only eight caravans here. We are also very glad we have our own
shower!!! There is no mobile phone
coverage in Windorah, but there is a service station, a shop, a pub and an
information centre – everything we need.
