Our tourist travels continued, with a trip to the
Daintree. Another early start as we
joined the thousands of tourists and locals on the beautiful, scenic drive
between Cairns and Port Douglas, where much of the traffic disappeared, thank
goodness. We continued through Mossman
to the ferry crossing over the Daintree – and discovered hundreds of cars
queued for the ferry. It took us an hour
of waiting before it was our turn to board and then it was a race north – or
some of the vehicles thought it was! We
stopped at the Alexandra Lookout to let the traffic clear and also look at the
scenery. However, a group of people were
gathered about the information sign and pointing to a snake on the other side
of the fence and slightly downhill.
Naturally, out came the cameras and after many snaps, we were back in
the car before realising we had forgotton to look at the view! We realised after some research that we had
actually been looking at a coastal taipan!!!
Our next stop was at the Daintree Discovery Centre where we climbed the
lookout tower, wandered the boardwalk to McLean’s Lookout and ended up with the moving dinosaurs in the Jurassic Valley. From
all the laughter, our tourists obviously enjoyed themselves.
Next stop was Cape Tribulation beach for some vitamin D
therapy and indepth study of mudskippers before heading to the lookout. We stopped at the Daintree ice cream place on
our return and we all enjoyed a sample cup with four different tropical
flavours, with the exception of Emma who continued her study of different
brands of chocolate ice cream. With the
afternoon rapidly disappearing, we returned to the ferry crossing and
discovered there were nearly as many people wanting to leave the Daintree as
there were heading north this morning!
We were also lucky enough to spot a large crocodile on the mud banks of
the Mowbray River as we crossed the bridge, so lots of reptile sightings today.
