In the Tropics

Sunday, 6th June

Cloud cover made for a warmer than expected morning – a balmy 9 degrees and the most magnificent sunrise! Staying hitched up and only being connected to power makes for a quick getaway and we were on the road at 8.00 am. The cloud remained for a couple of hours before clearing to clear skies at 19 degrees. Once again, there was very little traffic on the road and changing drivers every hour helped make the long drive to Alice Springs much easier.

We had a quick stop at Erldunda Roadhouse to add a few litres of diesel (if we hadn’t, we could very well have had to push the caravan onto site!) – at $1.79.9 a litre, we decided to wait until we reach Alice Springs to fill the tank completely.

Lunch was spent at a lovely rest area on the banks of the Finke River, which even had some water in it! It was a fair slog through the sand, though, to reach the water. There were a number of people settled in for the night at the rest area and had their fire already lit. Following the recent rains, the country looks quite lush – lots of grass (with seed heads), low scrubby shrubs in flower and the dead finish trees even had green foliage. There are some very happy cows and kangaroos about at the moment.

We are staying at the MacDonnell Range Caravan Park – a very large park, extremely well run with very good facilities. It even has TWO jumping pillows!!! We will stay here until Friday, which will give us a change to catch up with laundry, housework, etc.

Cat was very excited about flying the flag today!
