Requests? It actually played. |
Last night we treated ourselves to a meal at the North Gregory
Hotel – we had the dining
room to ourselves; the waitress assured us that the night before every table
had been filled three times!
This morning was not very pleasant – 8 degrees is NOT what
we have become accustomed to and the woolly slippers and heater have now been
retrieved from under the bed. However,
once the sun came up, the temperature quickly rose to a rather pleasant 23-25
degrees, with cloudless skies.
We only had a relatively short drive of 200 kms to Ilfracombe
this morning and the road was much more comfortable than yesterday. Unfortunately, we once again had a strong
headwind and it was most exciting watching the fuel consumption rapidly climb
to about 22 L/100km. The kangaroo
population in this region must be phenomenal – it was virtually wall to wall
roadkill all the way between Winton and Ilfracombe. Although we see the occasional kangaroo
during the day, today we saw literally hundreds in the paddocks! A large flock of emus was good to see, though.
We had a short stop at Longreach to refuel before continuing
to Ilfracombe for our overnight stop.
This small town is about 22 kms from Longreach and has a lovely little
caravan park, with very friendly hosts.
The town also boasts a mile of machinery and numerous heritage displays,
all open and free to the public.
Our friendly, Louie the fly, didn’t want to leave us this
morning, so travelled in the caravan and then invited his local cousins to
visit. Cat absolutely refused to leave
the caravan – he is still recovering from the heat of the last few days.
