Friday

Friday, 9th July

Darwin’s weather is very predictable – 32 degrees, sunny and humid again!

Late yesterday we received the sad news that our children’s pet dog had died after being accidently run over. Unfortunately, the children witnessed the accident – very traumatic for 7 and 8 year olds.

In an effort to make them (and us) feel a little better, we decided it was time to put together a small care package and post home. A power point presentation of Cat’s holiday, to date, had already been prepared, so we just needed a few odds and ends. Trolled the Palmerston Shopping Centre without much success, so decided to venture further afield to the much large complex at Casuarina. This centre is worse than a rabbit warren and with no floor plans on display anywhere, it really was a hit and miss affair, especially finding our way back to the carpark!

Last night we decided to attempt some forward bookings at Derby and Broome (fingers crossed for Broome!), selecting caravan parks from the directory as well as the internet. No problems at Derby (which is a bit worrying), Cable Beach nearly laughed at me, left a message on an answering machine at another Broome park and also talked to a lady at the Broome Caravan Park (no where near the beach, of course). She promised to ring me straight back (still waiting), so I rang again this afternoon and had no problems securing a site (again, a bit worrying). Also decided to retry Kununurra after being told a week ago that the caravan parks don’t take bookings. Guess what? Not a problem, what type of site would we like – grass or slab, see you on the 17th. I obviously spoke to someone previously who was having a bad day.

The photo today is of the wave pool in the Darwin Harbour – the only safe place to swim with no crocodiles or stingers (no one worries about sharks anymore). Last weekend a swimmer was stung during an organised swimming race and was in quite a bad way when recovered from the water. Evidently he was very lucky in that only one tentacle had wrapped around his face and throat. One should always believe the signs!

Another sign we have seen frequently has been on a car/van, as well as numerable bumper sticks, all bearing the name “Huneypot.” Curious as to the meaning of these stickers, we eventually met a man (65ish) who had a sticker and asked the question. Huneypot is the “trading” name for a group of strippers who visit pubs to amuse the clientele and leave bumper stickers on the bar. Glad we didn’t google it!

The kids will love getting their care package, just what they need at the moment :-) Michael is taking it harder than Emma, poor little man.
Cam has been banned from scallop diving (by me) after reports of a very large white pointer shark being spotted in the very spot where he likes to go scallop diving.
