More Rock Art

Tuesday, 13 July

We awoke to a warm, smoky/misty morning, a hangover from yesterday’s burnoffs. The perpetual burning off really ruins the spectacle of this part of the country – everything looks so burnt, even after the new growth commences. We left Jabiru and headed towards Cooinda, with a detour to the rock art sites at Nourlangie.

This site was along the base of the escarpment, with some climbing involved, but no where near as much as Ubirr. Once again, the walking poles came in very handy. Walking in 30 degrees was much more pleasant than yesterday’s 35, and a fair amount of the path was shaded, which helped, although we were still wet through by the time we returned to the car. Nourlangie not only has rock art, but also a number of dwelling sites, some dating back 20,000 years. Cat was a bit worried about the Rainbow Serpent!

We arrived at Cooinda just on lunchtime – and were extremely glad we had booked a powered site! There aren’t a great deal of powered sites here (plenty of unpowered), and power is a must to run the air conditioner. Unlike Jabiru which was very grassy, Cooinda is dirt! And mosquitoes!!! Will probably need to call at the Red Cross for a transfusion when we leave.
