Friday, 4th June
Yesterday evening we were lucky enough to have an entertainer in the park who was happy to sing ballads for a couple of hours – 1960’s favourites, mainly – and simply asked for a gold coin donation. We lasted for nearly an hour before it became too cold to sit outside. The days may be warm, but desert nights certainly aren’t!!!
Left our neighbours bright and early this morning (they were still undecided about going to Roxby Downs) and headed north into beautiful sunshine and clear skies. There didn’t seem to be as much traffic on the road today, either. The salts lakes still have water in them, although not quite as much as we saw last year. The red/orange sand did change to become more gibber desert, although the vegetation present remained very green. We didn’t see emus today (not like yesterday), but did spot one kangaroo and a couple of wedge tail eagles. Eagles can be a bit of a problem when feeding on roadkill as they are much slower to take to the air than crows.
We stopped for lunch in a rest area today, as we travelled nearly 400 kms. I have to say that I find it quite disgusting that fellow travellers dump their garbage in these rest areas rather than carry to the nearest town. Some of these rest areas certainly leave a lot to be desired as far as cleanliness is concerned.
Coober Pedy hasn’t changed a bit in 12 months – still gravel, junk and underground houses. We will only stay one night as we did all the touristy things last year. A trip to the supermarket was really the highlight of the afternoon, especially the fisticuffs happening outside between some of the local population.
Tomorrow will be an overnight stop at Marla. (The photo of Cat was taken at Woomera - we was trying to explain the workings of the glass thingamjimmy)
