Thursday, 3rd June
We were rather glad to pack up this morning – the septic smell was a bit overpowering with the early morning high volume usage! The morning started off cloudy but quite warm at 16 degrees, which quickly cleared to magnificent blue skies and sunshine by the time we reached Port Augusta, with the temperature sitting on a balmy 20 degrees. Might be time to find a few t-shirts from under the bed as it was becoming a bit warm in the car – heaven forbid that we turn the climate control down!
The most amazing thing has happened – the desert has turned GREEN after all the rain of the past couple of weeks. The plants are green and flowering, there is even grass growing on the edge of the road. It was such a contrast to last year when everything was brown. The colours were just gorgeous – the green foliage against the bright red/orange earth. There was even some water in the salt lakes.
Not long after we passed through Port Augusta, we overtook our neighbours, John and Vera, who were stopped in a rest area. They caught us up before we arrived at Woomera and have an adjoining site in the caravan park!
This afternoon we walked to the town centre, looked at the rockets (again) and left John and Vera at the museum (John’s brother was stationed at Woomera for many years). No doubt the evening will be spent socialising.
Tomorrow a long drive to Coober Pedy.
