Friday

Friday, 11th June

Very, very cold morning, only 3 degrees in Alice Springs. It was very nice sitting in a heated caravan, sipping filtered coffee and watching the campers huddled in their beanies, coats and gloves “enjoying” themselves in the fresh air!

The road north was long and straight, with not much variation in the scenery apart from the intensely red dirt. The road was quite busy – mainly a continuous stream of caravans heading north! We had a quick roadside stop outside Aileron to change drivers and a longer stop at Barrow Creek for lunch, along with a large number of other caravans.

Our overnight stop is at Wycliffe Well Roadhouse – the UFO capital of Australia. Evidently, the number of UFOs seen is relevant to the amount of alcohol consumed. But, one never knows … Cat is very unsettled tonight!!! The weather has warmed up now we are further north – a very pleasant 20 degrees and even warmer out of the wind.

Shortly after we pulled in and set up, another Tasmanian couple pulled in next to us. Talk ensued, as did coffee and fruit cake shared with the couple from Hobart. There is definitely something spooky about this place, because David and Lorraine from Hobart are friends of Carlene and Rex from the bowls club and they knew who we were!

There is no mobile telephone coverage here – we need to drive about a kilometre down the road. There are two large Aboriginal communities to the east with coverage and we are on the extreme edge. Television isn’t too good either, so no football results tonight.

Tomorrow, we are off to Banka Banka Station – no power, no telephone, no internet and no television. How did we ever survive in the olden days???
