Today we experienced a Canberra
frost and fog – with thick frost on the ground before the fog rolled in shortly
after day break. Once again, Cat took up
his usual position in front of the heater and refused to budge!
The morning consisted of a bit of housekeeping – namely
laundry, with the winter wardrobe getting a bit of a workout – then a visit to
Westfield Belconnen for a new photo card for my camera and a few necessities.
Then it was off to the National Film and Sound Archives for
some lunch in their lovely coffee shop before exploring the exhibits (well,
only three actually). We spent some time
in the “Front Room,” a recreation of a 1950’s lounge and dining room, complete
with typical furniture and a large Kriesler television. We spent some time watching clips of early
television performances before heading to the Art Deco theatre. We would have loved to spend more time in
this theatre (if only we had known about it earlier!) as films of life in major
Australian cities in 1964 were playing.
Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to wait for Launceston and
Hobart to come around, but the films we did see certainly brought back many
memories of life in the early 1960’s. We
continued on to the National Library of Australia to inspect their current
exhibition – World War 1, of course.
By lunchtime, the fog had lifted and we enjoyed a fairly
mild, sunny afternoon.
