Cairns on Friday

Friday, 5th July

Nice mud

Just prior to being thoroughly splashed by a swimmer!

Our dinner at Barnacle Bill’s was very nice – barramundi for her and Atlantic salmon for him; he also had cheesecake for dessert! We were amazed at the number of tourists in the city, with all the restaurants appearing to be fully booked. We believe that tourism has picked up in general, with direct flights to China helping boost numbers. There are also numerous British Lions supporters about as well – quite easy to pick them out in the crowds.

Thursday was overcast all day, with periods of light misty drizzle which didn’t help the humidity one little bit. As Les has been anxious to know if his favourite shop (Ralph Lauren) was still at the DFO, we checked this out during the morning – he is now a happy chappy, although he didn’t buy anything. Oroton and Royal Doulton are still there as well (which kept me happy), but many of the shops were empty.

Today has been very hot after a cloudy morning, which cleared at lunch time. The morning just seemed to disappear somehow (Himself is still thinking of washing the car and still thinking of washing the caravan) before we headed into Cairns for a walk past the lagoon (we always seem to have to walk past this area!!!) and along the boardwalk. The lawns around the lagoon are well populated with young backpackers boosting their vitamin D levels. Then it was a stop at Rusty’s Market, along with many, many other people, for a supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, before heading to Cairns Central for a few more necessities.
