Cape Leeuwin

Thursday, 2 September

I opened the front window curtains this morning to the most magnificent sunrise – just magic!

Today we headed to Cape Leeuwin and its historical lighthouse. I think we were truly blessed that yesterday’s wind had dropped, as the Cape would generally be a place where one would normally walk bent over! We spent some time walking around the buildings and looking at the Southern Ocean meeting the Indian Ocean, but decided it wasn’t really worth $15 each to climb the stairs in the lighthouse. There was also a “pirate cow” in the lighthouse grounds (result of a mooo-ving exhibition a couple of years ago), which was just one of a few different cows we saw during the day.

After leaving the lighthouse, we took the road through the karri forests (not the main road, of course, but the dirt track road) to have a closer look at these trees – also the arum lilies (weeds here) which grow in abundance under the trees. They look very pretty but must be a real pest on the farms. There are also a number of limestone caves in this area, some of which are open for inspection.

We made a detour on the way back to Prevelly Park and its surf beach – the coastline in this region has very many surf beach – which isn’t far from where the fatal shark attack occurred recently. There were lots of board riders and lots of BIG waves.

This really is a beautiful area and we are so glad we made the decision to come this way.
