Farmstay

Wednesday, 1st September

The rain disappeared overnight and left a strong, very cold wind behind, which resulted in a cross wind for the drive south to Margaret River. Beautiful countryside on the way – rolling hills, lush green grass with black cows (also dairy cows), and sheep. As we neared the Margaret River region, we quickly realised we were in a major wine production area.

Cat is grinning from ear to ear – like a pig in mud, as the saying goes. There are 92 wineries on the regional map, all available for visits and tastings. That, of course, doesn’t include the breweries and meadery, not to mention restaurants! We spent a couple of hours this afternoon touring a small area near the caravan park (more later on that) and visited the Margaret River Chocolate Company first – yum! Plain chocolates, all types of dried fruit and nuts chocolate coated, truffles, chocolates, more chocolates, chocolate bath salts and soap, chocolate body rubs (not sure on the use of these???), souvenirs, etc. It didn’t take Cat long to make a selection!

Next stop was the Sandalford Winery – much to Cat’s delight. Michael Buble is giving a concert at this winery in March; evidently winery classical concerts are very much the in thing in this area. We tasted a few wines and made a small purchase (don’t think the lady was very impressed) before continuing further afield. We have decided to select just two or three wineries to visit and not overload.

We are staying at the Taunton Farm Holiday Park, which is a small Big 4 caravan park on a working farm a few kilometres north of Margaret River. It is just beautiful – we look out over a dam and green paddocks and we get to feed the animals at 5.00 pm each day! The amenities are excellent and there are only about six tourist caravans here – definitely not the tourist season.

The blue flowers belong to the tree hovea (finally know the name of one!).
