Today we finally made the effort to travel to Berry Springs – everyone tells us “you MUST go to Berry Springs and the Litchfield Pub!” We drove through Berry Springs village without really being aware we were in Berry Springs and continued to the Litchfield Pub. We were rather expecting something with character, similar to the Daly Waters Pub, and were rather surprised to discover a very ordinary looking brick building (with drive through bottle shop) in a paddock in the middle of no where! There was also a general store and service station on the site, so we bought an ice cream for morning tea and were extremely thrilled to have visited the Litchfield Pub.
Returned to Berry Springs and turned into the Nature Park (decided to give the wildlife park a miss – don’t need to spend another $20 each to look at a kangaroo!), hoping this was the site of the hot springs. Bingo! What a delightful place, a real oasis in the middle of some very dry and ordinary bush. The hot water tumbled over a small waterfall into a stream which flowed into a large pool. Steps had been set into the banks to make entry/exit easier. Of course, where were the bathers? In the caravan! Unless a strong swimmer, a noodle would be a necessary accessory. While we were looking at the big pool, a couple of backpackers dived in and one said it was nice to finally have a wash!
On the return journey we turned off into Howard Springs to look at the caravan park there. It looked very similar to where we are at Freespirit Resort and was much further from Darwin. Our caravan park has more huge, American fifth wheelers than we have ever seen in one park.
