Yellow Waters

Wednesday, 14 July

Everyone was up bright and early this morning (5.30am) to prepare for our 6.15am departure for the Yellow Water Sunrise Cruise. The mozzies were waiting for us!!! The two hour cruise through the wetlands was definitely worth the early start, with the sky just starting to lighten as we set out (with the mozzies). We hadn’t travelled very far before we came across our first crocodile of the day, just hanging about, waiting … As the sun rose over the horizon, we were treated to a glorious spectacle of reflections, wetlands, birds and more birds. We were lucky enough to discover the pair of jabirus in their nest high up in a tree, unfortunately we caught them having a romantic moment! Sea eagles, brolgas, kingfishers, jacanas and thousands upon thousands of egrets, magpie geese, whistling ducks, spoonbills and all sorts of other kinds of birds were there, just waiting for us. Crocodile sightings soon became a bit ho-hum, the boat driver didn’t even stop for the last few. Some wonderful photos to bore relations with!

The next part of the cruise took part in the dining room of the resort – a full buffet breakfast. We had a lovely selection of fresh fruit, cereals, hot buffet, pastries and breads. The only downsize was the coffee served in a plastic cup! Stained, at that. Truly, a lovely start to the day.

Again, another very hot day, although it became very windy by lunchtime, and very dry air. Everything now feels coated in red dust.

After lunch we visited the Warradjan Cultural Centre – a well presented static display of the local culture. The exit, of course, was via the obligatory gift shop.

When we booked the sunrise cruise, we were able to purchase another cruise for $10 (compared to $80), so we decided to undertake the sunset cruise. Evidently, they are very different (even if they are not, it will still be nice), so there should be even more photos!!!
