A & E

Wednesday, 11 August

Today we decided to undertake an in-depth study of the Pilbara’s medical facilities!

At 6.00 am, Leslie decided to attempt getting out of bed – BIG mistake. After some time spent trying various positions that actually enabled movement, he eventually stood on his feet – for a few seconds before having to sit. At this stage, he decided that a state of unconsciousness was preferable to a state of agony. It was also at this stage that I decided some medical assistance was required and rang the ambulance. A nice man and lady arrived and after some examination, Leslie was loaded onto a stretcher, placed in the ambulance and taken to hospital.

A very nice doctor, who came from Burnie, looked after him, along with some very pleasant and helpful nurses. It was agreed by all that some pain relief was called for and given, it was also at this time that Leslie decided he could manage a short walk to the rest room. His second big mistake of the morning, as it then took considerable time and effort to return him to a prone position on the bed. It was decided that stronger pain relief was required and he is now supporting the Tasmanian poppy industry.

After finally being able to walk unsupported (and without severe spasms), we left the hospital after lunch, clutching a prescription for more of the happy pills. The remainder of the afternoon was spent chasing medication by one while the other rested comfortably in bed.

Consequently, we will have a further two nights in Karratha – the caravan park staff have been marvellous and had already made the reservation while we were at the hospital.

(No photos today - not a good look this morning!)
