Monday, 2 August

A very windy night, which included a telephone call from the camel ride company, asking if we could change our booking time (not enough people wanted to ride camels at 7.30 am). Due to the expected weather conditions we jumped at the chance of deferring the ride for a day or two and after hearing that we could join a large school group on Tuesday morning, we finally settled for Wednesday morning.

It was still very windy today, but the cloud had gone and the temperature rose to a very pleasant 27 degrees. Another check of the tide tables confirmed that we had no chance of seeing the dinosaur footprints (the tides have to be VERY low for this to happen), so we decided to check out the view from the lighthouse instead. This was stunning, with the deep red earth ending at the bright orange rocks and the oh so blue sea. We scrambled around the rocks (with oodles of other like minded tourists) for some time (too many white caps to spot whales) and came across Anastasia’s Pool. This small pool (the size of an outdoor spa) was built by a lighthouse keeper for his arthritic wife. How the poor woman managed to climb down the rocks to this pool (and how he filled it with water!) is anyone’s guess.

We continued around the back road (roads in Broome are either bitumen or red sand) that runs parallel to Reddell Beach, with its sand and unusual rock formations. This road was closed a couple of days ago when we tried to drive along it, so don’t know how the people who live in the few houses in the area manage to come and go.

The afternoon was spent relaxing – and ironing!
